News Releases Top 50 Public High Schools Named By Philadelphia Magazine List includes 21 Bucks and Montgomery County High Schools MONTGOMERYVILLE, Pa.—Oct. 18, 2005—The September 2005 issue of Philadelphia Magazine ranked 21 public high schools in Bucks and Montgomery counties among the top 50 public schools in the eight-county Philadelphia area. The remaining 29 top public schools were distributed among the six other counties. "Once again, these rankings demonstrate the excellence of the public schools in Bucks and Montgomery counties. The dedication of our teachers, administrators, and students, along with strong community support, all contribute to our success," noted Jerry Oleksiak, a leader of the Council for the Advancement of Public Schools (CAPS) and a special education teacher in the Upper Merion Area School District. He added, "Our students and academic programs are often recognized at the regional, state, and national level. We are equally proud of our athletic, creative and performing arts and vocational technical programs as well." The list was calculated using three main variables: student achievement factor, which was weighted at 50 percent, student/classroom environment factor, and cost factor, which were each weighted at 25 percent. A number of different statistics contributed to the ranking in each category. The public school data was obtained from the Pennsylvania and New Jersey Departments of Education and the average top teacher salary information was pulled from the Philadelphia Inquirer’s 2005 Report Card on the Schools database. The final analysis of data was conducted by statisticians from Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts and the Human Services Research Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
