Town Meeting Discussed Impact of High-Stakes Testing as “Test Season” Begins
A town meeting sponsored by the Council for the Advancement of Public Schools was held for Bucks and Montgomery residents Thursday, March 27 at Upper Merion Middle School in King of Prussia to discuss the impact of increased high-stakes testing on local public school students. The panel (pictured below) included: Jerry Oleksiak, special education teacher, Upper Merion Area School District, now serving as Pennsylvania State Education Association Treasurer; Abraham Lo, Wissahickon High School biology teacher; Caroline Allen, president of the Pennsylvania Parent Teacher Association; Nick Ciasullo, retired principal from Lafayette Elementary School; Tracey Matisak, moderator and award-winning journalist; Scott Parks, director of Bucks County Technical High School; and Rep. Daylin Leach (D-149), addressed the implications of the current No Child Left Behind legislation and how the drive for accountability is actually creating a "teach for the test" mentality in our public schools. The meeting, moderated by award-winning journalist, Tracey Matisak, afforded audience members the opportunity to ask questions related to the issue.
